ZedPavilion

The London exhibition features at the ZedPavilion, a building that reflects the city’s low-carbon capital message and objectives set by the London Development Agency

Outside the ZedPavilion

The ZedPavilion was designed by ZEDfactory, an architecture firm based in London that is leading the way in the field of low-carbon building design.

Formed in 1999, ZEDfactory has an impressive track record of delivering Zero (fossil) Energy Development buildings in the UK, and is working hard to bring zero-carbon homes closer as affordable housing.

The ZedPavilion is an emissions-free public structure, which aims to leave no carbon footprint, highlighting China's commitment to battle climate change.

ZedPavilion features

The pavilion comprises two interconnecting carbon-neutral buildings on a 30 sq km site.

A combination of solar-driven power systems provide energy to the pavilion, while 22 wind caps along the roof keep the building well ventilated.

Rainwater is collected for irrigation purposes, and used for the toilet facilities and to water plants in the building.

Also, an insular layer has been created with recycled materials, enabling the pavilion's energy levels to be reduced.

The insulation will keep the building cool during the summer and warm in the cooler months.

The ZedPavilion is located in the north section of the Urban Best Practice Area (UBPA), in Zone E of the Expo site.

BedZED

The ZedPavilion was inspired by the Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED), which was completed in 2002 and is the largest mixed-use sustainable community in the UK.

Based in Hackbridge, south London, BedZED was created by ZEDfactory with the aim of allowing a thriving community to enjoy a high quality of life, while minimising negative effects on the environment.

BedZED utilises a biomass-combined heat and power plant, an on-site sewage treatment, a rainwater recycling system and natural wind-driven ventilation.

One Gallions zero-carbon development

One Gallions is a proposed new housing development that is following in the footsteps of BedZED, the ZedPavilion and the ZEDfactory's efforts.

Based in the Royal Docks, in east London, One Gallions will be an energy efficient, zero-carbon residential development, and is due to be completed in 2013.

A combined heat and power unit will produce heat and electricity from the combustion of locally sourced woodchip, while the homes will have features including energy efficient lights, fittings and appliances.

It's being created by the One Gallions consortium, which comprises BioRegional Quintain, Crest Nicholson and Southern Housing Group.

The partnership is helping to regenerate inner-city areas by creating new, well-designed, sustainable communities.

The One Gallions consortium was chosen by the LDA as its partner to create the sustainable, zero-carbon development.
